Back in my day...
It bothers me a little when people say “back in my day…”. Usually people say this when they refer to their past, to compare it to today. What they mean to say is “back when I was younger” or something like that, but I find the choice of phrase perplexing. What exactly IS your day? Is it not your day anymore?
“Back in my day” implies that it is not your day anymore. That “your day” was in the past, and now its someone elses day, or at the very least, not yours. This sounds to me like an admission that ones best days are behind them, done, dusted and finished. But you’re still alive! Your day is still going. This current moment is just as much a part of your life as any time in the past.
Your day will end when you die, but until then, consider this current time as “your day” as well.
